Today we re taking a look at the history of 32-bit and 64-bit computing, whether or not your computer can handle it, and the benefits and shortcomings of using a 64-bit Windows environment.

A Very Brief History of 64-bit Computing

Before we start dazzling you with interesting history, let s get the basics down. What does 64-bit even mean. In the context of discussions about 32-bit and 64-bit personal computers the XX-bit format refers to the width of the CPU s register.

The register is a small amount of storage used by the CPU where the CPU keeps the data it needs to access the quickest in order for optimum computer performance. The bit designation refers to the width of the register, thus a 64-bit register can hold more data than a 32-bit register which in turn holds more than 16-bit and 8-bit registers. The more ample the space in the CPU s register system the more it can handle, especially in terms of utilizing system memory. A CPU with a 32-bit register, for example, has a ceiling of 232 addresses within the register and is thus limited to accessing 4GB of RAM. All around it s a bumpy road for 64-bit adoption among home users. The release of Windows 7, however, turned things in favor of 64-bit computing and many off-the-shelf computers now ship with Windows 7 64-bit.

Can Your Computer Handle 64-bits.

Whether you re a Windows XP holdout contemplating an upgrade to Windows 7 or you re curious if your computer running Windows 7 32-bit can handle an upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit, there are a few handy ways to check.

You can check your version of Windows installation to see if you re already running a 64 bit OS. Under Windows Vista and Windows 7 all you need to do is right click on Computer in the Start Menu and click Properties in the right-click context menu. Unfortunately you ll be hard pressed to get drivers for older devices. Have an expensive sheet-fed scanner from 2003. Love it. Too bad. You re probably not going to find any 64-bit drivers for it. Hardware companies would rather spend their energy supporting new products and encouraging you to buy them than supporting older hardware. For small things that are easily replaced or need to be upgrades anyway, this isn t a big deal. For mission critical and expensive hardware it is. You ll have to decide for yourself if the upgrade cost and tradeoffs are worth it.

Your motherboard doesn t support more than 4GB of RAM. Although it s rare it s not unheard of to have a motherboard that will support an early 64-bit processor but not support more than 4GB of RAM. In this case you ll still get some of the benefits of a 64-bit processor but you won t get the benefit that most people crave: access to more memory. If you re not buying bleeding edge parts, however, hardware has gotten so cheap lately that it might be time to retire the old motherboard and upgrade at the same time you re upgrading your OS.

You have legacy software or other software issues to deal with. Some software doesn t make the transition to 64-bit smoothly. Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows 7 64-bit has no support at all for 16-bit applications. If by some chance you re still using a really old legacy application for something you ll need to either virtualize it or forgo an upgrade. Also, just because an application is 64-bit doesn t mean the plugins and extensions for it are. Photoshop and Firefox are common applications where people run into this problem. The core application is available in an updated 64-bit form but important plugins are not.

Before we leave the cons side of things, I m going to weigh in on a personal level. I have been running Windows 7 64-bit for nearly 2 years now and I have run into only a single issue related to the operating system being 64-bit. Everything has functioned smoothly, I ve enjoyed rocking 8GB of ram, I ve run half a dozen virtual machines at one time without a hitch, and overall I ve been extremely pleased. The only issue I ran into was trying to get my early 2000-era Canon scanner to function. Canon simply failed to produce a driver set for it and all the hacks and tweaks failed to coerce it to work. Ultimately I just bought a new and equally as cheap scanner for 50 and called it a day. All things considered it was a very nominal trade off and given how little I actually use a scanner it s possible I might still be unaware it wasn t working. 64-bit computing has become affordable, easy to use, and virtually headache free.

To find the PCI Device ID for your adapter, follow the steps for your operating system.

Auto Glass Replacement

Auto glass issues fall into a few common categories, which call for varied solutions. Chips, cracks and leaks are some of the most frequent auto glass concerns, each impacting functionality in its own unique way. Mobile Auto Glass Replacement or In-Shop Auto Glass Replacement.

Replacing Quarter, Back and Vent Glass

Windshield Replacement

When chips cannot be filled, or cracks have expanded to more than a few inches in length, it may be time for full windshield replacement. Age impacts windshield life too. Haze and pitting develop in ways that leave replacement as the only option. Leaks and molding problems are also corrected by replacement. Some windshields are attached to moldings before they are installed onto vehicles as single units. In these cases, windshield replacement addresses both parts, through removal and installation of an entirely new assembly. As a result, it can be difficult to reposition the molding without removing the entire assembly. Other moldings are adjusted using specially designed tools, and technical experience. Unlike windshields, door windows are usually made from tempered glass. When broken, tempered door windows usually shatter completely, eliminating the potential for repair. I bought this cap for my husband because he has to wear a black cap on his job and the company only supplies one. That cap is frequently too dirty to wear the next day. Who wants to worry about coming home and washing a darn cap after working 10 hours.

This cap is far superior in quality. He wants to wear this one all the time. Because it is easy to clean he usually does just that. I paid more than you pay for an average cap but it was well worth the extra money. In this case at least, you get what you pay for and I am glad I bought it.

Sometimes in our ever lasting hunt for a bargain I think some of us forget that quality counts too. And this cap, is quality.

I have lots of hats with glitter and colorful trim, but really needed a basic black one for those bad-hair days when I have to run out to the store for some little nothing that seems important at the time. :- I wanted black because it goes with more, so when I saw this cheapie at Amazon, I grabbed it up.

For this low price I expected it would be poorly constructed, so I m very pleased that it s sturdy, well-made and of good material. Woo-hoo For once I got a real bargain.

I tip my cap to the maker of this product. Highly recommended.

At first a tad suspicious of what the quality the product would be even after reading the reviews. I was very surprised by the packaging, delivery speed, considering the Christmas holidays and quality of this product. I fully inspected the cap upon delivery and was surprised at the quality of the construction, sewing and the comfortable fit due to the ease of the Velcro type adjustment strap in the back. I will be using this cap to attach a military patch and a couple of insignia pins which I believe will look outstanding. I Highly Recommend this company and look forward to doing additional business with them in the future.

it is a nice hat, i was so eager to get it in the mail, when i tried it on which is it was a bit too tight. the seller failed to put a proper sizing chart. So, big and tall men if your head size is close to or over 8, forget it. Be careful not to get your hair caught in the strap, it nearly pull out my black natural hair, but it is a good buy

There isn t a whole lot to say about this hat, I m afraid. It s a plain, black baseball-cap type hat. It s not the most comfortable one I ve ever worn- with a short haircut like mine, it feels rather coarse. But it s simple and it s well-made so far as I can tell. It s ideal for someone who wants a plain hat to have adornments of their own added to. I got my hat so I could have the emblem of a military school I attended sewn on. This hat is, as I said, ideal for things like that. It s a good hat, and I recommend it for those looking for what it has to offer.

I bought this hat for my Halloween costume, and I ordered it a week before Halloween, and it came two days before. I thought that it would get here late, because things usually don t get to my place on time, and so I was really impressed with how fast the sipment went through and came. I am also impressed with the hat. It is a great hat, and it was a reasonable price.

For a networked Minolta/QMS 2300 DL, I used a Redhat Queue Type

of Unix Printer LPD, and set the Server to the IP address

of the printer, and the Queue to lp. For Ubuntu, I used

HP JetDirect

and set Host: to the IP address of the printer and Port: to 9100.

For low level testing, you can also create a raw queue, which will accept

ZjStream files as-is and send them directly to the printer.

You MUST install using the above procedure.

There are now two methods for color correction available in foo2zjs:

the original ICM-based method and Gerhard Fuernkranz and Leif Birkenfeld s

CRD-based method. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, which

is why both methods are still included.

The original ICM-based method uses the manufacturer-supplied ICM color

profiles and converts those to CRD s on the fly. This method is the

fastest. But it requires Well Tempored Screening, e.g. ghostscript 8.54

or better.

The advantages of the ICM method

are that its the fastest of the two methods, and it often allows the

foo2lava engine to optimize monochrome output on a color queue to printing

just the K plane.

The CRD-based method was tuned for Ghostscript and the foo2zjs engine,

and produces better colors. It also uses thresholding to make up

for the halftoning issues in Ghostscript. The drawbacks of this

method are that it is very slow, it requires Ghostscript 8.14 or better for

best results, and it currently cannot optimize

pure monochrome text printed on a color queue to printing just the K plane.

It is expected that this latter deficiency will be fixed soon.

So, pick your poison.

The foo2zjs engine began life as Robert Szalai s

pbmtozjs program.

It also uses Markus Kuhn s

JBIG-KIT compression library included, and Marti Maria s

icc2ps program included.

The foo2zjs engine was overhauled by Rick Richardson to

add color support for the Minolta/QMS 2300DL,

add command line options,

limit data chunk size to 65536 bytes,

and other miscellaneous features. Rick also contributed the zjsdecode

program and the foomatic database entries for the Minolta/QMS magicolor

2300 DL.

Gerhard Fuernkranz and Leif Birkenfeld created the CRD-based

color correction methods.

Since it is a discontinue item you might want to try to find a compatible driver by going to your device manager right click on the device properties details tab drop down menu select hardware id Copy and Paste the hardware id string. And we can use it to search for a driver.

Since it is 7 years old now and support ended 3 years ago my second bit of advice would be to just break down and buy a Windows Seven Compatibile wireless adapter.

Unison s end is bittersweet. The market for a Usenet client in 2014 isn t exactly huge. But if you know Panic, you know we do our very best to never drop things awkwardly we like to leave our apps in a good place for our very valued users.

Unison 2.2 adds the 1 feature request for Unison: multi-connection downloads for much faster transfers. It also adds a lot more Retina assets for more beautiful browsing on newer machines, and fixes many little bugs and quirks.
