Display driver stopped responding and has recovered - HP Support Forum - 447259

Finding the correct driver for your device has never been easier. DriverGuide maintains an archive of Hitachi drivers available for free Download.

I am having the same issue a failing display driver. I have done all the steps from Daniel_Potyrala s post, but my situation has not improved. I have an HP tx2500 running Windows 7 Professional. I have updated the bios to the most current version and I have the most current ATI display drivers downloaded from HP BTW, I cannot find the older versions of the ATI display drivers on the HP support site you provided, only older versions of the BIOS.

I did some upgrades to this system as I bought it in August of 2008 and am past the warranty period.

1. I replaced the hard drive that came with the computer, a 160gb 5400 RPM with a 500gb 7200 RPM Hitachi

2. I used to have Windows Vista 64-bit and upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit when I installed the new HD above. I still have the old HD with Windows Vista and am tempted to put it back into the machine if all else fails.

A few things I noticed:

1. The display will fail only when the laptop is running on battery power. If I have the AC plugged in, I have no problems.

2. The display will only fail if the computer is under moderate load running on battery power. If I play Youtube videos or any moderate flash content from websites, the display driver will fail. If I play video files, the display driver will fail. I have experienced a few failures with word processing, but it is not as regular. If the system is idle, there are no failures.

3. I will not get the BSOD. The display driver will just fail regularly and recover, sometimes every 20-30 seconds.

Since I saw no issues when using AC power, I figured my battery might be the problem. So I tried using a new battery, an 8-cell HP replacement more power than the 4-cell battery that came with my laptop, but the display driver still fails.

Could it have been my HD replacement. Will a 7200 RPM drive draw more power and cause other systems the display driver to fail. Or is this a Windows 7 issue. I feel like the battery cannot supply enough power voltage. especially since the laptop will work fine on AC power.

I m about ready to give up on this machine. It is unusable as a portable system.

Hi,

While installing video drivers in your HP laptop, you would have to ensure whether the available memory in your HP Laptop is able to accommodate the video drivers you are installing. If the available memory in your HP laptop does not have the capacity to hold the video drivers, you would have to stop your installation. You would have to face certain installation troubles in your PC if you try to do so.

Get more information to fix Video Driver problems in HP Laptop :

Hope this informatio helps you otherwise let me know back.

Set peace of mind as your highest goal, and organize your life around it.

I got my 1st HP dv6 laptop in June 2011. After about 1 month, the display driver has stopped working/ blue screen of death/ computer freezing and crashing episodes started regularly occuring sometimes 2 times a day. Since I was under the 90 day return period, I took that laptop back and got another HP dv6. Less than 2 weeks after obtaining this laptop, same thing all over again. However, being only 2 weeks into my 90 day grace period and extremely busy, it was awhile before I attempted return 2. During this time, I began to notice some patterns relating to the whole   display driver has stopped working/ blue screen of death/ computer freezing and crashing episodes. The episodes were much more likely to occur when I had a bunch of windows/tabs open all at once AND I was currently watching or had open a page with some type of video. I love to watch tv shows online, and thus, usually have 2-3 tabs/windows open from different network s websites.

My 90 days was approaching, so back to the store I went. This time, they had the dv7 laptop available, so I opted for that one instead. Not even a week went by before the   display driver has stopped working/ blue screen of death/ computer freezing and crashing episodes started happening. I was soooooo mad. Clearly, this was more than just bad luck. However, with laptop 3, I noticed even more patterns. The episodes more often than not, occurred when I had been watching a show online, paused it, and returned some time later to finish watching the show. As SOON as I would press play, like clock work, display driver down, the video box that had been playing the show would turn green, the blue screen of death appeared, the laptop froze, and crash. It got to the point that every single time I paused a show, upon return, I would know that there was around a 75 chance that as soon as I pressed play, boom-  display driver down, green box, bsod, freeze and crash. In addition, I also took notice that a lot of times when these episodes took place, my laptop fan would start spinning like crazy and the base would get extremely hot. However, this overheating aspect only occured during or just before the episodes approximately 30 of the time.

Anyway, exchanged laptop 3 in for laptop 4; also an HP dv7. What a shocker, the SAME thing happens all of the time. Again, 1-2 times a day, and just about every single time, as a result of me pressing the play button on a paused tv show. I just went back to the store today to check out my options because there is NO WAY I am getting another HP laptop. I can t do it and I can t take it anymore. I have lost too many partially or fully unsaved documents due to an unexpectedly crashing laptop. It is absolutely RIDICULOUS to have to deal with these episodes on a daily basis. A laptop should be able to handle some video afterall. I know what you are thinking, just quit watching tv online. NO WAY.  50 of the reason as to why I even have a laptop is for watching tv online. I don t have tv at home and I love to carry my laptop around the house with me and have a tv show playing while I am doing laundry, dishes, showering, getting ready, cooking, cleaning, etc. When I have a show playing in the background while I am doing such unpleasant chores, I don t even mind doing them. That being said, if a major reason behind the purchasing of a laptop for yourself was to type reports, or, to make and store picture/video files-- and the computer crashed 65-75 of the time- every time you attempted to access these features, how happy would you be with your computer..

And yes, I am the fool for going back to HP four times in a row. Foolishly believing that each time, the probelm would have been fixed and that my new laptop would be bug-free.

Anyway, hopefully the details of my story can better help others in similar situations, or help HP to figure out what in the world is wrong with their laptop computers and the display driver.

BTW, one last thing. When I was using firefox instead of chrome, when the display driver has stopped working message would appear, I could hurry and open the task manager and kill the related process can t think of the name. Anyway, by killing the process, the blue screen of death and computer freezing/crashing would not occur.. It still sucked to have to constantly do that, but doing that was better than dealing with crashing/rebooting. Sadly, firefox had too many things that drove me crazy so I stopped using it. Chrome operates differently because when the display driver message appears, there is no corresponding process

to kill or at least not one that I have been able to pin point.

I fixed my HP AMD Driver.

I contacted HP one day and asked them to send me a new laptop because it was still under warranty till May 2012 - that s how frustrated I was with the AMD.

They sent me an empty box, told me to stick my laptop in it back up all my stuff and mail it somewhere.

I do trust HP, but I don t have time to backup my computer, and I don t have any resources to facilitiate it.  To be without the computer for 3 weeks was also not an option.  Also, the phone number they gave me 1-800 something did not work in Canada - so I was uber cautious and decided not to mail it quite yet.  They did follow up with me later and ask what I did, but obviously they should check their own forums and get a solution.

So I bravely tried something else.

I thought about it and thought about for a long time, and since sometimes restoring your computer works if suddenty it has stopped working, perhaps restoring to a previous version might also work go back to something tried and true and ignore the new software for awhile till they get the bugs out kind of thinking.

I had visited the HP site supports to look at the AMD drivers for my machine and had tried installing them but always the same problem.  freezing up while in email or looking in various windows.

I rolled back my AMD driver to a previous version.  I would suspect something is up with the updates and that is what is driving people bonkers.

I have a HP Probook 4520s, and when I finally rolled back the display drivers, they stopped freezing up.

It took me over 1 year to figure it out.  I can have 8-10 windows open now and it works reasonably well - at least it stops freezing and giving me silly error reports.

Then back on your computer have a look to see what Display adapter you have.

Start Control Panel Device Manager Display Adapters

I now have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series as my display adapter.

Double click on the display adapter that you have.

It will open up the properties of your adapter.

Under the Driver tab, you are given the opportunity Roll back Driver.

Take note of the Driver date and version you have currently installed.

Then try the roll back driver button.

Hopefully, if it worked before you may have inadvertently updated it, it will work again.

I had some other display adapter there until I thought to roll it back.

I see I m not the only one experiencing problems.

I bought my HP laptop almost a year ago and didn t have any problems until about 2-3 months ago to which only occured on FOX website watching their TV show videoes. I usualy just had to keep refreshing page and pray to work. Now it s happening on all network sites including HULU and gets worse by the day.

Not only does the screen freeze, often lose the video screen, I get the display driver stopped and recovered, often the blue screen pops up and crashed the laptop.

Also ctrl-alt-del doesn t work.

I have wasted soooooooooooooooooo many hours of my life due to these issues. And with these problems and I get back on websites to continue watching shows. I have to sit through all the commercials again wasting more hours of my life. All adds up and continues.

I live in mountains with no TV signals nor satelite avaiable.

I am a new HP buyer with laptops. warrenty is over. If HP doesn t fix this issue or give me a refund HP has definately indeed lost a customer for all products they sell. I also had MAJOR problems with their printer/scanner unit I purchased some years ago that kept crashing my computer.

Not a way to do business if you want to keep customers to keep buying. No trust here and money doesn t grow on trees nor can you make up past time.

Hello. I m very that found support for hp. Before 1 year I bought my pc and after some time I have problem with driver. It s doesn t matter what I do - watch video or looking something in internet, as open pages.

Last time I get every 30-40 min : Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.

Before to get this message, everythng froze, then become black monitor, then it s become normal and I get this message. All fine, but after I get it - my browser is frozen. If I try to close it, my pc froze again. So I can t restart pc, need to turn OFF from button. If I not close browser, I click - shut down - then it s froze again. OUT of actions.

Ok - so I have this common problem with a DV4-2145dx.

The machine when booting up immediatly crashes atikmdag.sys

I tried to login to safemode with network support and downloaded the updated drivers from HP, but when I try to install them I was told I needed to login as ADMIN but that is not possible.

I then reinstalled windows, and I cannot even complete the installation of Win 7 not service pack, and using the recovery partition and since I cannot get past the install I cannot update the drivers.

I remember years ago, using a windows boot disk, yes I said disk I am an old skool tech support guy that stopped doing OS support around 2002 and so at this point I am thinking if I had a bootable CD/DVD with Win7 SP1 FYI its a 64-bit version of the OS that I might have a successful install.

The machine has a major heat issue, and it heats up right under the LCD where I remember there being a video inversion cable being to connect the LCD to the motherboardagain I am rusty here and so I am listing all that I can think of in hopes that someone can guide me.

This machine is out of warrenty, and my buddy cannot afford having this looked at by the team at Staples or Best BuyI think this is fixable but I am stuck.

Any help is really appreciated and I am willing to try anything to fix this problem.

Thank you,  rstone010

I have had reasonable success doing several things:

Cleaning up my browsers so they don t have unnecesary stuff extensions and add ons - still don t really understand the purpose of that junk so I was ruthless and cut everything out.

Tried the Malware Bytes program trial and this identified some issues, which I found interesting and stepped carefully through each identified problem, and made a decision on fixing things only if I understand and could justify running the fixes it suggested.  If you like what it found, pay the 20 bucks or so for a lifetime membership.

I ve eliminated every search engine but Google out of my browser.  I couldn t stand the constant request to change my browser to default IE, so I have Chrome as default browser, with IE available to me.  I believe you can disable IE from starting up if you have an XP, but I have a WIN7 now, so have to remember that.

Keep search engines  you actually use.

Delete search Conduit - uninstall it, root it out.  Not sure what it is but it messes things up.  Uninstall it, and then remove it from your startup browser page, where it likes to hide and bother you.

Make sure you start  your browser on a simple home page or a series of home pages you trust.  I think it is better to bookmark pages you use often than to have them start up.  There is a huge risk to click something on a home page that you are not interested in and get a download of something you don t want.  Better not to tempt yourself and stay focused.

Get rid of Mcafee that might be hanging deep in your system. There is a removal tool on their website.  It seems to attach itself to everything these days.  I was advised to root it out with Revo Uninstaller and also to check out the Uninstall Tool that McAfee had on their site.  You only need one Antivirus program running on your computer.

Use something like Revo Uninstaller to carefully root out all bits of programs you know longer use.  Make sure when using Revo you watch what you do don t click too many boxes without paying attention to what you re doing.  Delete carefully.

Go through each program in your Programs Accessories and learn what they are.  Uninstall stuff you don t use anymore if you can recall installing it.  Look them up on the internet to make sure they are not important for your laptop functioning.  Learned that the hardway.

Don t randomly install things - do your homework first.

and Don t randomly delete, but look them up, and find out why it s there.  Since there can be several points of view regarding. exe files or other things, make sure the source is reliable.  If unsure, leave it, and ask in a forum for insight.

While in add/remove programs, click through each program, and where it allows you to repair, run the repair for that program.   Not all programs will have a repair option; ignore those, but be aware of what the program is there for.

Don t accidentally uninstall things that are part of HP support or HP advisor, etc.  You might be able to suppress HP Advisor, but you don t want to delete it because then it will keep saying it s missing, which is more annoying.  If anyone knows how to suppress HP Advisor from starting up without deleting it, I would love to hear it.

Use a Chrome or Firefox browser - not an IE browser.  I know it s sad for IE, but it is very unstable both in XP and now in W7 after 3 years I just could not get it working right - always hanging up.  So, I ve switched to Chrome.

Remove every random driver update/driver scan program that you ve ever installed on your computer - this will help your computer stop checking for updates.  I never buy these things, but I do periodically download a reputable one if there is such a thing, and let them suggest to me the updates.  Then I just go into my programs and pick those out and see if there are updates on the HP website, or just run HP Updates which usually tells me it s all good, and then run Windows updates, which usually tells me its all good, even though the driver scan tells me I have 26 outdated drivers.

I have discovered that rolling back a driver to a previous version can work.  The only thing is every time you run a driver update, it will identify 26 drivers that are out of date.  So what if they are out of date.  If it s working, leave it.  Else investigate carefully if it is related to your problem, and try installing an updated driver.  Keep track of every driver you install / unistall, and do it slowly so you have time to monitor and check to see how it is going.

With regard to the ATI /AMD video card, I just have say to make sure that you study first if the driver you are getting is truly compatible with your laptop. Else, go to the laptop manufacturer such as HP and get the downloads there.  Since I uninstalled the video card driver that I had gotten from the manufacturer s website, and reinstalled the HP drivers, my computer has been fairly stable.  It was good advice in my case to not go with the recent driver update, but stay with the HP driver.  It does take a bit of trial and error, but sometimes an update is not intended for your model, but for another windows version completely.  So be careful with updating drivers.

Limit the number of windows open - I often have 10 emails open and 5 windows, and then wonder why the thing crashes when I start editing an mp3 file and listening to the radio all at the same time.  So be reasonable in your expectations.  Allow the thing to breathe between tasks.  Don t play music, download programs, run driver updates, talk on google phone, and layout  your scrapbook all at the same time.  Try doing 1 or 2 things at the same time, and you will be happier with the performance.

Make sure you let your computer run for a full 24 hour period if you have a lot of crashes.  I discovered on another W7 machine that I use that if we don t use it regularly, the thing shuts itself off and misses its update time at a.m. whoever thought was a good time is crazy.  Since we cannot figure out to get it to turn itself on it s on a network, the updates never happen, and it gets farther and farther behind, resulting in a lot of error messages and hangups of Windows in general.  So, change the Windows Update time to something you can live with, and you will see an improvement in your computer performance.  If a computer does not install its updates regularly, performance will be hampered, and it will stop working regularly.

I was also advised to uninstall AVG anti-virus paid version to rule it out too, but chose just to uninstall the AVG Secure Search, which did seemed to hamper a lot my searches and not help much.  If my probook fails again, I am going to uninstall AVG when it expires and scope out another reliable one.  But so far I like AVG and it runs quietly unlike norton which bothers a person daily.

I did find some interesting help on the windows forums when I asked pointed questions, and then looked at the answers to see if they were potentially helpful.  The more you dabble with the crashing issue, the more you come to realize it s the programs on the computer that are conflicting and if you are like the average computer user you have downloaded a lot of stuff you don t need, either in your browser features and add ons or with regard to registry cleaners, driver updates, and even duplicating antivirus software.

1. HP refuses to update the ATI video drivers; some of them were out of date even before these laptops were released.

2. The time is not the issue, its that the delay is there in the first place.  ATI drivers have had this problem for at least 13 years.  I ve never encountered this with NVIDIA or Intel, which may have it but likely to a far lesser degree.

3. What settings do you have in mind to overcome this bug.  Other then not using the ATI chip and just using Intel graphics, but hey, we paid for the better graphics.

4. Nothing there for MS trouble shooters to find; it s an ATI bug.

5. Safe mode, etc. not the problem.  Again, an ATI bug.

6. It s a laptop; you can t change the video card.

7. Not really applicable, again, it s not the delay, it s the ATI bug.

BTW, if you contact ATI, they refer you to HP.  If you contact HP, they refer you to ATI.  But HP chose to use ATI Intel hybrid graphics and then refused to support that choice.

Hi:

Sorry that didn t work.

That is the driver you need, and I don t know where else you can get it.

You can try installing the amd chipset driver and see if that works instead.  You want the first file listed on the webpage.

Windows 208 20- 2064

The other driver you need is the card reader driver

Product Name: HP Envy 15-k231tx

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Hi,

I would like to buy external monitor and connect with  laptop, what max resolution can be support.

3840 x 2160 display monitor can support.

Thank You.

Ok, I ve been trying to connect an AOC portable USB 3.0 monitor to my wifes Envy 15t and I ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling drivers, rebooting in between processes and I just can t get the portable monitor to work. If I open the display settings in control panel, it s not seeing the portable monitor that s plugged in. If I go to device manager to check the driver, it says the driver for this monitor is working correctly.

I have an older HP DV6 and when I plug the monitor in and it comes right up.

Previous to this, I ve tried USB 3.0 to VGA adapters because there s only 1 HDMI and needed to connect to 2 Dell monitors and have experienced issues where the USB 3.0 adapter, when I connect the vga monitor would say adapter not running in USB 3.0 mode and would display in a low resolution making everything larger than should be. It did that with 2 different adapters. But, if I unplug the adapter and plug it back in, sometimes it may take 3 or so times doing that, it would connect properly and display the correct high resolution. Not sure if this would be related to the issue with the portable monitor.

To me, it seems as though the USB 3.0 ports aren t running consistantly on 3.0 mode, if that s possible or detecting when something 3.0 is connected.

I m pulling my hair out here, this is just weird.

Someone please help.

My laptop has two graphics cards, a Intel HD Graphics and a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 850. How do I make sure that It is switching to the NVIDIA card when playing games. For example it probably should run the Intel Card when doing basic things like browsing the net. But when I want to play a game say Skyrim how to I make sure it is using the Nvidia GPU to get the best possible preformance. Thanks.

Hi, my screen is flickering while playing Netflix movies. It does not happen with any other applications or when I play DVD. It starts in about 5 seconds into the movies and it happens about every 4-5 seconds. The screen goes blank for about a second, then it shows few horizontal lines, and it goes back to normal. And after few more seconds it starts again. I also noticed that it always happened when I move my mouse while playing a movie in Netflix.

My PC is HP Pavilion 17 inch monitor. With i3 Haswel processor and integrated Intel graphics. Win 8.1

I updated all the drivers, but nothing helped.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Dmitry

Figured out. Changed Refresh rate from 60p Hz to 40p Hz and it solved the problem.

BTW, HP help Desk is totally useless There is not point to call them - at least their free support in India is completely incompetent.

I d like to use my digital pictures as a screensaver movie i.e., random photo from My Pictures shown for a few seconds then the next one comes up  I was able to do this on my PC using Windows XP.  Is there a way of setting this up in Windows 10.

Thanks

Display not operating at any point. Laptop does work with an external monitor. Problem started with the lid breaking off the hinges. The laptop still worked but the lid would flop off at times. During this the screen went black at one point. I assumed the screen cable had been damaged so I replaced it. However the screen is still not working. I have fixed the hinges, and the only thing that looks like it was damaged was the black cable from the wifi came off the solder on the lid. Not sure why that woud keep the screen from working however. The screen is operational when I plug it into a seperate HP laptop, so it is not the issue. I have tried removing everything, detaching the battery, unpluging the lap top and holding down the power key for 15 seconds, as well as for 1 minute, with no luck. I have also installed the latest graphics driver. Any ideas.

To sum up:

hinges have been repaired

lcd screen cable replaced

Back in May 2015 screen just went blank white.  No messages or anything.  Hard reboot holding down keys did nothing.  Had to send in to HP for repair. They said its a known issue.

Now just today it happened again.  Same problem.  But computer is now 1 month out of warranty.

Does or has anyone had this problem.

Not sure I even want to have it fixed at this point.  It looks to be a recurring problem and eventually the cost of repairs will be more than the computer itself.

Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Have you followed these instructions.

Using video

Your HP computer is a powerful video device that enables you to watch streaming video from your

favorite websites and download video and movies to watch on your computer without needing to

connect to a network.

To enhance your viewing enjoyment, use one of the video ports on the keyboard dock to connect an

external monitor, projector, or TV. Your computer has an high-definition multimedia interface HDMI

port, which allows you to connect a high-definition monitor or TV.

IMPORTANT:

Be sure that the external device is connected to the correct port on the computer,

using the correct cable. Check the device manufacturer s instructions if you have questions.

Connecting an HDMI device

NOTE:

To connect an HDMI device to your keyboard dock, you need an HDMI cable, sold

separately.

To see the computer screen image on a high-definition TV or monitor, connect the high-definition

device according to the following instructions.

Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the computer.

Connect the other end of the cable to the high-definition TV or monitor.

Press f4 on the computer to alternate the computer screen image between 4 display states:

PC screen only: View the screen image on the computer only.

Duplicate: View the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and external

device.

Extend: View the screen image extended across both the computer and external device.

Second screen only: View the screen image on the external device only.

Each time you press

f4 on the computer, the display state changes.

Hi  SStanton436,

It is a wonderful site  to find answers and suggestions.

I grasp that since upgrading to Windows 10 whenever you use the USB port or insert a memory card your screen starts flashing on and off and can only  be resolve this by rebooting the system.  This also occurs when you right click on a desktop icon.

Have you ran the  HP Support Assistant  to aid with HP updates.

Have you ran the Windows troubleshooter.

If you check Device Manager do you see anything with an error on it or an unknown device.

Here is a link that may also help.   HP Notebook PCs - Green Screen and Other Video Playback Issues Windows 8, 7.

Should you like further assistance please provide your exact model of M7 notebook and the results from the troubleshooting.

If this allowed you to overcome your difficulty please choose accepted solution to aid others.

Good Luck.

Yesterday took apart and repaired my notebook LCD screen with water damage. The screen itself was working just fine but it had two different problems.
